Example project - “Evolution of Neurotransmitter receptors”

Keywords, Bioinformatics; Neurotransmitter Receptors; Two electrode voltage clamp (TEVC) electrophysiology; Biophysics.

Project description, Neurotransmitter receptors are membrane-spanning proteins responsible for mediating fast synaptic transmission between neurons. Glutamate is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and its fast action is mediated by ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs). The contribution of these vital receptors to nervous systems of diverse animals is unknown, and we therefore lack crucial information in understanding the evolution of complex nervous systems. The aim of this project is to employ mutagenesis and electrophysiology experiments to shed light on how these receptors function throughout animals and how human receptors evolved. The insight we gain on the molecular function of human iGluRs will hopefully also lead to new avenues of pharmacotherapy.
